History

AMERICAN TAP DANCE FOUNDATION, INC.

Formerly the American Tap Dance Orchestra, the company was originally created, choreographed and directed by master tap dancer Brenda Bufalino and founded by Ms. Bufalino along with Tony Waag, and the late Charles ‘Honi’ Coles in 1986 as a tax exempt 501c3 charitable organization. From 1986 through 1999, the Orchestra performed in hundreds of concert, stage, and film projects and thrilled audiences around the world. From 1989 to 1995, the company also operated Woodpeckers Tap Dance Center in New York City, and presented year-round programming of performances, workshops, daily classes for adults and children, tap jams, lectures, and film presentations.

In 2001, with a new generation of tap dancers and enthusiasts, the Orchestra was renamed, and under the direction of Tony Waag, renewed its vision of establishing the first-ever Center for Tap, -- an international home for dancers, based in New York City.

“Tap Treasures is a contemporary “mash up” of tap dance, hip hop, waacking, body percussion, soft-shoe, swing combined with vintage video and photographs remixed to classic songs such as Fascinating Rhythm and I Can’t Give You Anything But Love. Tap Treasures reinvestigates and revisits eight historic locations in Manhattan that contributed to the evolution of tap dance. As we celebrate an almost forgotten history of this fascinating art form, let us not forget the people, the places and events that have influenced, perpetuated and molded our very own American art-form Tap Dance, born and raised right here in New York City.” Tony Waag, Artistic Director/Producer
