Duke Ellington’s 120th Birthday Celebration

This annual event is thrown by the Duke Ellington Center for the Arts to commemorate Duke Ellington’s birthday.

13th Annual Dance Parade
Saturday, May 18, 2019

This year ATDF students, parents, families and artists will be participating in both the Dance Parade and the DanceFest 2019.The 12th Annual Dance Parade starts at 1pm on 21st and Broadway. It travels down Broadway and then Union Square West turning into University Place. It follows University place to 8th Street (aka St. Marks Place) where it turns east on 8th Street. At Astor Place it passes in front of the Grandstand and then continues on to Tompkins Square Park for is DanceFest 2019. DanceFest comes alive in Tompkins Square Park on 5 Stages with free Performances and dance instruction.

A walking tour of the Broadway Theater District featuring SEVEN historic Broadway theaters which hosted major productions during the tap dance renaissance. Theaters include the St. James, the Broadhurst, the Minskoff, the Lunt-Fontane, Sony Hall (formerly known as the Diamond Horseshoe), the Ambassador and the August Wilson.

If you are enrolled in an Adult Residency you are welcome to join us for daily Tap Talks during the lunch break (12:30pm - 1:30pm) each day before or after your class. Be prepared & bring your own lunch.

Brenda Bufalino will curate Tap Talks during lunch with Adult Residency teachers Dianne Walker, Max Pollak, Thelma Goldberg, and Chloe Arnold. Discussions about the different artists philosophy and practice of improvisation, composition, music for dancers, and other pertinent topics. Ms. Bufalino will also give a talk on Spontaneous Composition, and she and Tony Waag, will show some video and discuss the development, philosophy and tours of the American Tap Dance Orchestra.
