TAP IT OUT FAQs

What is Tap it Out?

Tap It Out is a free outdoor public event.  It is a contemporary percussion and movement “soundscape” that promotes TAP DANCE as pure music, while consciously deconstructing the basic elements that propel tap forward. Worldwide students of all ages and levels, join to create a chorus of hundreds of tapping feet. The production is approximately 15 minutes in length, and will be performed three consecutive times.

When and where is the show?

Performances will take place at 1:00pm, 1:30pm, and 2:00pm on Friday, July 13th, in Father Duffy Square in the heart of Times Square! Specific directions will be available to you at orientation

Who can participate?

Advanced-beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Pre-Professional level dancers are welcome.  You may register for Tap It Out as part of a festival package or an à-la-carte option.  Please visit atdf.org to register.

What is expected of me, if I choose to participate?

Participants are expected to learn the choreography prior to the group rehearsals that begin Monday, July 9th.   Instructional video links will be emailed to you (other guidelines are outlined below). These expectations have been set in order to ensure a quality production.

Since the performances will be held in a public space, there will be a constantly changing audience, a myriad of surrounding activities, and many distractions. Your complete focus and attention will be required.

How do rehearsals work?

Before arriving at Tap City, participants are placed in one of three groups.  Each group will have a Rehearsal Director and two to four Rehearsal Assistants - collectively called Team Leaders. These Team Leaders will review the choreography and determine which parts you will be responsible for. They will instruct you on staging, entrances, exits, and are there to assist you with any concerns. They will also perform with you.

How do I know what group I’m in?  How do I get the instructional videos?

Your group assignment and instructional video links will be emailed to you the last week of May.

Why do I have to learn the material beforehand?

The individual steps of the choreography may not be difficult, however the execution of the ensemble material as a whole is complicated. When our group rehearsals begin, we will have only four days to stage an entire show. This time must be spent achieving clean footwork as a chorus of dancers, integrating the groups for the counterpoint and canons, and organizing overall staging. When you arrive knowing the material, it will allow our directing team to effectively produce this show, and it will be a much more fun experience for you!

What if I can’t keep up?

We want you to participate! Please take advantage of the instructional videos. Learn the material well before you arrive. During rehearsals, feel free to ask your Team Leaders to help you with problem spots.

If at any time you feel like the material is too hard, we can modify your participation within your existing group.

Likewise, if WE feel the material is too challenging for you, your participation will be modified or limited.

What is the dance surface like?

All dancers will be dancing on an individual 2’x4’ sprung Tap Dance Board provided by Tap City. Boards will be available at rehearsals to ensure you have time to practice dancing on them.

What do I wear in the show?

The costume for the show includes the official Tap City/Tap it Out T-shirt (which we provide) and black pants, shorts or skirts (that you provide). You may wear tap shoes of any color.

Please remember that this is an outdoor show in July. It may be hot, so please dress comfortably and in light fabrics. Sun caps, visors, sunglasses, and headbands are permitted and suggested.

Will there be bathrooms at the show?

Bathrooms in the Times Square area will be pointed out to you on show day.

Will there be food or water provided at the show?

Water will be provided to all participants throughout the day of the show.

Where do I keep my belongings during the show?

Specifics will be discussed at the orientation.
