The Tap City Youth Program is 5 days packed with tap dancing fun for intermediate and advanced level dancers ages 9 to 15. Our program offers young dancers a fun, supportive and challenging environment to develop well-rounded tap skills. 

The all-inclusive program includes:

YOUTH PROGRAM PRE-PLACEMENT DVD: All students will be pre-placed in their Youth Program Repertory classes. Please send a DVD submission or web link via YouTube etc. that demonstrates your technique and performance skills showing the following material: shuffles, flaps, time-steps, cramp rolls, paddle and roll, pull backs, favorite flash step, and perform a one-minute tap choreography piece to music demonstrating your ability to keep time while expressing your personal style. Once the submitted DVD or web link is reviewed, each student will be placed in the repertory group that is appropriate for his or her skill level. Program is limited to 55 dancers.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

YOUTH PROGRAM ORIENTATION: On Monday morning, please join our Youth Program Staff at 8:45 for a short orientation.

TECHNIQUE: Youth Program students will be placed in either Group A, B based on their technical level and placement video. Each morning begins with a class to warm everyone up and develop clean tap technique, taught by one of the choreographers.

REPERTORY: After a quick break, students will continue working in their Repertory Group with one of the choreographers.

LUNCH: Be sure to send your dancer with daily lunches, healthy snacks, fruit juices, water, energy bars etc. for a long day of dancing. Students will have lunchtime in a designated studio with staff supervision.

MASTER CLASSES: Each afternoon, dancers will have a special master class, designed to enhance their rhythm skills and tap knowledge.

THURSDAY TAP FUTURE STAGE REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE: On Thursday morning, all the Youth Program tap dancers will report to Symphony Space for a stage rehearsal. Thursday evening students will perform in Tap Future.

 

ABOUT TAP IT OUT! REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCE: 

Youth Program students are required to attend all Tap it Out Rehearsals (Monday, July 9 - Wednesday, July 11 (1:15pm - 2:30pm) & Friday, July 13 (TBA) if they plan on participating in the presentation of Tap it Out on Friday, July 13th at Father Duffy Square/Times Square (Times TBA)

All Tap City students will rehearse five days in preparation for TAP IT OUT! Tap City’s unique outdoor celebration of percussive feet. Imagine a chorus of 100s of tapping feet performing a cappella choreography in multiple tap dance styles creating a explosion of tones and rhythms presented out of doors and FREE to the public. Tap It Out is conceived and created by the mayor of Tap City Tony Waag and is co-directed and staged by dancer/choreographer Lynn Schwab. If you are registered in the Adult, Pre-Professional or Youth Program, you have the opportunity to participate in this event as it is included in your package! Once you enroll, you will receive detailed instructions in the Spring. Each dancer will dance on their own platform, which will be supplied by Tap City, and, will learn their part of the presentation in advance via YouTube. Adult and teen group rehearsals will take place Monday, July 9tth - Friday, July 13th and are designed around your regular class schedule.

 

ABOUT THURSDAY:

Adult students will have a short afternoon tech rehearsal, time TBA, at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre/Symphony Space. Adult students will perform in the Tap Future performance that evening.

 

ABOUT FRIDAY:

Adult students will go to Tap it Out Rehearsals (TBA) for last minute rehearsals and then later in the afternoon perform in Tap it Out at Father Duffy Square/Times Square!
