YOUTH PROGRAM (ages 10-14)
The Tap City Youth Program is 5 days packed with tap dancing fun for intermediate and advanced level dancers ages 10 to 14. Our program offers young dancers a fun, supportive and challenging environment to develop well-rounded tap skills. The all-inclusive program includes:
- Tap Repertory Intensives with professional choreographers Derick K. Grant and Claudia Rahardjanoto.
- Master Classes in African Dance, Bucket Drumming & Improvisation.
- A performance at Tap Future, “the Tap City All-Student Performance ”
- An additional performance opportunity on Wednesday, July 7th in the Take It To The Studio showcase for students wishing to perform their solos, duos, trios and small ensembles.
- A student ticket to Friday night’s Tap City Premier Performance
- A Tap City T-Shirt (This is your costume to perform your Rep piece)

YOUTH PROGRAM OVERVIEW & SCHEDULE:
On the first morning of the program students will arrive at 8:30am to check in and the day will begin with a brief Orientation from 9:00-9:15 a.m. Each morning students will study with a choreographer in their repertory group to learn a piece of tap choreography from 9:00-11:30a.m. During the supervised lunch break, students will eat their bag lunches and have the opportunity to make new friends connecting with fellow tap dancers from across the globe. They will also have master classes in African Dance, Bucket Drumming and Improv. Each afternoon, after lunch, students will have special events consisting of learning or reviewing the Shim Sham (Monday), a Tap Talks/Tap Film session with World Renowned Tap Artist Karen Callaway Williams (Tuesday) and of course, their opportunity to showcase their talent in the Take it to the Studio performance (Wednesday).
On Thursday students will study at the studio until 12:30 only. The afternoon is free and that evening they will perform their newly learned tap piece at the Tap Future Performance at Symphony Space. Friday is a free day, with the option (for ages 12 +) of signing up for additional Master Classes (not included in Youth Program Tuition), and the Program ends on Friday night when students will attend the Tap City Premier Performance to see the finest professional tap dancers from across the globe.
YOUTH PROGRAM PRE-PLACEMENT DVD: New this year, all students will be pre-placed in their Youth Program Repertory classes. Please include a DVD submission or web link via YouTube etc. with your Tap City application that demonstrates your technique and performance skills showing basic material (shuffles, flaps, time-steps, and paddle and roll) and perform a one-minute tap choreography piece demonstrating your ability to keep time while expressing your personal style. Once the submitted DVD’s or web link is reviewed, each student will be placed in the repertory group that is appropriate for her or his skill level. Applications will be processed as they are received and space is limited to 35 dancers.

- African Dance, Bucket Drumming & Improv
- African Drumming with Audrey Davis. Come dance to live West African percussion as you learn the basic steps and body movement of African Dance. The history, meaning and role of dance in African society will also be explored. No experience necessary!
- Bucket Drumming with Bernice “Boom Boom” Brooks. Rhythms are made from rhythms od the earth, taps and drums. Let's explore some or all of them from the creative voice of the bucket drum!
- Improv with Alicia Smith: Every tap dancer has something to say. Find your voice and express yourself. Loud, soft, fast slow…it doesn’t matter because it’s you speaking.
TAP FUTURE CONCERT, Thursday 7/8 7:00 PM
On the final evening of the Youth Program all dancers will meet at Symphony Space to perform the new tap dance they learned at the Tap Future performance. Families and friends who want to see their dancer perform will need to purchase tickets. Student performers will not need a ticket.
TAP CITY PREMIER PERFORMANCE at Symphony Space, Friday 7/9 (8:00 PM)
Every Youth Program student receives a ticket to the cutting edge professional Tap City concert featuring today’s hottest tap performers (student ticket included in Youth Program tuition). Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult (general seating). We guarantee it’ll be an unforgettable night of tap dance artistry.
YOUTH MINI FEST (ages 6-8 and 9-14)
The Youth Mini Fest is a fun 4-day program that meets for each afternoon, Monday, July 5 through Thursday, July 8, and ends with a performance on Thursday, July 8 ON BROADWAY! Designed for beginning to advanced-beginning young dancers with at least 1-2 years tap training who want a taste of tap dance festival fun. This year we will once again have two groups: ages 6-8 and ages 9-14. The Mini Fest includes:
- Tap Repertory Intensive and technique with Choreographers Brandy Blaha & Courtney Runft
- Three special Master Classes in Hip Hop, African Dance & Bucket Drumming
- A performance opportunity at Tap Future, the All-Student Performance

The Mini Festival experience is designed for tap dancers, ages 6 – 14 and 9 - 14, with at least 1-2 years tap training. This is your opportunity to meet new people and make new friends while having a fun filled tap dance experience in New York City. This is your chance to dance your 3 minute (or less) solo, duo, trio, or small ensemble in front of a live audience in one of Tap City’s studio showcases. In order to be eligible for the above performance opportunities, students must be registered participants in the Tap City Youth Program. We're sorry, but due to space constraints, Mini-Fest students or students registered in Master Classes only are NOT eligible to apply to perform in the showcases.

For the Youth “Take it to the Studio” Showcases:
An audition video is NOT required. Print and complete a Performance Application and send by June 28, 2010. Applications are accepted from teachers, ensembles, and individuals. All festival students in the Youth Program, Pre-Professional and Adult Programs will have the opportunity to perform in one of the “Take it to the Studio” Showcases. Pieces must be 3 minutes (or less) in duration. Read below for music requirements. Showcase spots will be filled on a first served basis. If space permits, students may also sign up during the first few days of the festival.
Music Requirements: Only professional quality recorded CDs are acceptable. Badly burned CDs that are inaudible will result in your dancing a cappella. We suggest you test your CD on several different players to ensure it will work for your performance. Only the piece that you are performing should be on your CD. Please bring one copy for your performance and bring a backup copy with you. Both CDs should be labeled with name of group and name of piece. Remember to collect your CD's from our staff at the end of your performance. The ATDF is not responsible for any music that is left behind during the Festival.
2) TAP FUTURE - ALL STUDENT PERFORMANCE: (ages 6 - 96)

Do you have the urge to emerge? Tap City puts ALL of our students on stage in a fun show of youth, teen and adult students. Tap dancers will perform for each other—on Broadway!--in an informal performance featuring the newly minted work from all of the Tap City Residencies from the Mini-Fest, Youth, Pre-Professional and Adult Programs. It’s a chance to see and be seen, with all performers sitting in the audience to watch the works of fellow students, amateurs and professionals from around the US and around the world. A few dancers and ensembles will be selected from the Adult, Teen and Youth “Take it to the Studio” Showcases to perform also on this evening. Hosted by our entire Education Program Faculty and ATDF Artistic Director Tony Waag.

For advanced beginner through professional students, ages 6-19 in need of financial assistance to study in the Youth, Adult, or Pre–Professional Programs.
