History

AMERICAN TAP DANCE FOUNDATION, INC.

Formerly the American Tap Dance Orchestra, the company was originally created, choreographed and directed by master tap dancer Brenda Bufalino and founded by Ms. Bufalino along with Tony Waag, and the late Charles ‘Honi’ Coles in 1986 as a tax exempt 501c3 charitable organization. From 1986 through 1999, the Orchestra performed in hundreds of concert, stage, and film projects and thrilled audiences around the world. From 1989 to 1995, the company also operated Woodpeckers Tap Dance Center in New York City, and presented year-round programming of performances, workshops, daily classes for adults and children, tap jams, lectures, and film presentations.

In 2002, with a new generation of tap dancers and enthusiasts, the Orchestra was renamed, and under the direction of Tony Waag, renewed its vision of establishing the first-ever Center for Tap, -- an international home for dancers, based in New York City.

PRIMORDIAL MEMORIES

The wandering tap dance-nature poet Brenda Bufalino’s Primordial Memories is a dance of renewal, weaving the sinuous, ecstatic shapes and sounds of nature into organic counter-rhythms.  Blackbirds, blue herons and flying turtles evoke the elemental and evolve into the technological, covering the earth with it’s own rhythmic memory. Special guests include the Tap City Youth Ensemble.

TAPSPLOITATION

Directed/Choreographed by Michela Marino-Lerman. The story of a young woman and man who search for meaning and personal identity in 1970’s urban America. Through tap dance and the music of the era, Tapsploitation pulsates with the energy and turmoil of this perilous and exotic time, and follows the characters on their journey through the streets of the American city, to the jungles of Vietnam, to the abyss of drug addiction, and back to a dawning awareness of the path to self-understanding.

DANCE OF THE REVUE ERA
The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts
Bruno Walter Auditorium (enter at: 111 Amsterdam Avenue & 65th Street)
Dance in the American Revue, like the Roaring Twenties itself, was buoyant, frantic, and full of ingenuity, creating trends that exist to this day. While the Castles and the Astaires brought the art form to domestic parlors, ballrooms were full of Flappers invited to “Charleston” their way to happiness! Join our hosts, legendary dancers Marge Champion and Gary Flannery for an energetic evening with costumed Ziegfeld re-creations and demonstrations of the Era's dance crazes by Jerry Mitchell and the Broadway Bares Company. Special appearances by ATDF’s Artistic Director Tony Waag and members of the Tap City Jr. Ensemble and the Tap City Youth Ensemble. These programs are presented in conjunction with the exhibition, The Great American Revue: How Florenz Ziegfeld, George White and their rivals re-made Broadway, on display in the Vincent Astor Gallery from April 19 through July 27, 2012.
