February, 2009 Judson Memorial Church A tap dance concert “series” produced by ATDF staff members Tony Waag, Hjordis Linn and Tony Mayes and is ATDF’s first attempt at presenting a conceptual concert series consisting of nine uniquely different shows that continue to celebrate the diversity of tap, while illuminating the incredible breadth and scope of the dance form, from improvisation to choreography, contextual solo work to complex ensemble choreography and composition. Sound Check provides a new forum for expanding and developing new work. February 12, 2009 8pm Tune in to W-L-U-V and behold three pairs of the hottest young tap talents work out the rhythms of love to the smoothest radio DJ spinning your favorite platters. Director and chorographer Christopher Scott is joined by Kendrick Jones, Michela Marino-Lerman, Baakari Wilder, Carson Murphy, Melinda Sullivan plus Camille Gaston as DJ Max Love. STOP LOOK LISTEN Choreography & Music by Katherine Kramer and Lanzallamas Stop Look Listen fuses tap dance and contemporary dance with an original score performed by "Lanzallamas" moving alongside 4 dancers. The hybrid “afro-brazilian-gypsy” score heartens and propels the performers as they become a contemporary band of “tricksters” on a playful journey in a dangerous world.
February 13, 2009 8pm HEELING POWERS: RHYTHMS OF THE LEFT BRAIN Tap soloist Joshua Hilberman draws on a restless imagination in his one-man tour de force, a 'greatest hits' extravaganza with 20-year collaborator pianist Paul Arslanian. One-man band, improvisational virtuoso, filmmaker, choreographer, and vaudevillian, Hilberman presents tap dance past, present, and future: tap without borders. PRIMORDIAL MEMORIES The wandering tap dance-nature poet Brenda Bufalino’s Primordial Memories is a dance of renewal, weaving the sinuous, ecstatic shapes and sounds of nature into organic counter-rhythms. Blackbirds, blue herons and flying turtles evoke the elemental and evolve into the technological, covering the earth with it’s own rhythmic memory. Special guests include the Tap City Youth Ensemble. February 18, 2009 7-8:30pm TAKE IT TO THE STAGE! 7-8:30 pm: Performance/Cocktail Reception ATDF’s 4th Annual Fundraiser with premiere performances and new work created by Chloe Arnold, Barbara Duffy & Company, Derick K. Barbara Duffy & Company incorporates song, dance, dialogue, choreography and improvisation into an evening of high energy entertainment. Stages touches upon issues to which everyone can relate such as love, friendship, self-doubt and the courage to express one's true identity. It pays tribute to the masters who have shaped the art form and celebrates life through the universal power of rhythm. TIME STEP Directed by Mark Lonergan, Choreography by Ryan Kasprzak, Brent McBeth, and Derek Roland. New York's Parallel Exit presents a brand new work blending tap, rhythm, and physical comedy. Fresh, funny, and filled with moments of visual magic, Time Step pushes tap in a new direction by conveying a story of three hoofers entirely through rhythm and choreography. February 20, 2009 8pm TAPSPLOITATION Directed/Choreographed by Michela Marino-Lerman. The story of a young woman and man who search for meaning and personal identity in 1970’s urban America. Through tap dance and the music of the era, Tapsploitation pulsates with the energy and turmoil of this perilous and exotic time, and follows the characters on their journey through the streets of the American city, to the jungles of Vietnam, to the abyss of drug addiction, and back to a dawning awareness of the path to self-understanding. RUMBATAP Artistic Director Max Pollak, named one of “25 to Watch in 2007” by Dance Magazine, was the first person to merge American Rhythm Tap with authentic Afro-Cuban music and dance. Capturing the charged electricity and power of a Latin jazz "Orquesta," RumbaTap features a multi-talented international cast of musicians and dancers.
