Artists in Residence

ATDF's Artist in Residency Program (2011 - 2024) was one of the Foundation's newest initiatives, and one that steered the organization towards its goal to build an international home for tap artists in New York City.
Introduced in 2011, the program coincided with the opening of ATDF's current home the American Tap Dance Center. As the Center became a vibrant hub of activity, the residency program served as the anchor where a new generation of tap dancers had resources they needed to create, meet other dancers, enjoy studio space and ultimately present and showcase their work. In a field long defined by a nomadic existence, the American Tap Dance Dance Center and residency program provided the diaspora of artists a legitimacy and stability not traditionally available. For ATDF, the artist residency program operated as a service to the field.
Dancers/Choreographers of note (past & present) have included Chloe Arnold, Brenda Bufalino, Michelle Dorrance, Derick K. Grant, Max Pollak, Jason Samuels Smith, Caleb Teicher & Nicholas Young.
ATDF's Artist in Residence Program supported emerging, mid-career and master professional tap dancers recognized for their unique vision and personal style. Artists received weekly studio space (an average of (4) hours from mid-September to the end of June to support their creative process, create new work and mobilize their on-going activities and career.
The ATDF is also dedicated to nurturing a creative environment for artists to connect, explore and share their talent with other artists, students, ATDF faculty, the local community and the general public. The ATDF encourages artists to pass on a tradition. A tradition of teaching, learning, exploring and then passing it on to the next generation. ATDF programming is designed to connect the tap professional to our student body. Each resident artist contributed to educational activities at the American Tap Dance Center by teaching special master classes in our Year-Round Adult, Teen & Youth Programs, making guest appearances in ATDF events and performances and by creating and placing new contemporary choreography on the Tap City Youth Ensemble. The ATDF steward's innovation, fosters exploration, provides support and resources and provides a forum for each artist to reach his or her full potential as a working professional in the field.
